 Prerona, the Spastic Society of Jorhat, situated at Cinnamara on the southern fringes of the town, is dedicated to providing education to children with various types of disability and facilitating the rehabilitation of physically challenged persons from all walks of life.

Prerona is the Brain child of Sayera Rahman whose second child Zafri Nawaz is afflicted with cerebral palsy. Set up in 1992 on a 12-katha plot of land, the institution is affiliated to Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy, Kolkata (Spastic Society of Eastern India).

There is a management committee where most of them are parent or family member of disabled person to run the affairs of Prerona, which extend to a gamut of different areas.

Prerona runs a Centre for Special schools and a Respite care service for National trust. In addition to the school, Prerona also conducts rehabilitation Programmes for people with different types of disability.  It is approved as SNAP under National Trust for 10 districts of Assam. Its activities are - awareness Programmes, formation of Local Level Committee and activation of LLC at different districts. Registered NGO meetings are being regularly held and aids are also provided.

The teachers at Prerona have received training from Indian Institute for cerebral palsy but at present the institution itself runs an RCI approved training program.


From a small school service with few children at Ms Rahman ‘s house ,now it has a large set up with Centre for Special Education, Residential facilities, Vocational Centre, manpower development centre , DDRC Etc.


  "Prerona" is a non government voluntary institution for the person with disability was established in 1992 at Jorhat (on the southern fringes of the town) in Assam is dedicated to providing education to children with various types of disability and facilitating the rehabilitation of physically handicapped people from all walks of life.. Since its inception it has been functioning relentlessly catering to the different needs of the differently abled children of Assam. It is registered under Societies Act 1860, Person with Disability Act 1995 and National Trust Act 1999. It has received income tax exemption under 80(G). It has also received registration under Foreign Contribution Registration act. Prerona is the only RCI Recognized Organization in Upper Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. It has been approved as Information Centre under  National Trust (Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment).

     It is situated at Cinnamara, 3 Kilometers away from the main township in a lush green campus. The main academic and administrative building has facilities for different activities like physical therapy,vocational training etc.

          Besides, Conference Hall and the Respite Care Centre are situated within the well-planned campus in rural background .

Prerona also conducts rehabilitation programmes for people with different types of disability.

 a community-based rehabilitation programme is currently on under the aegis of the Community-Based Rehabilitation Forum, Bangalore, adding that under this programme various awareness camps for a total of 215 disabled people in 28 village of Cinnamara, Jalukoni and Rangajan areas are being regularly held and hearing and other aids are also provided.
The 27 teachers at Prerona have received special training both outside and at the institution itself. They have also opened facilities to train teachers under the Madhya Pradesh Open University and the National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities.



Prerona is an educational day center for children with disabilities . It aims at developing their maximum potential-physical, emotional and intellectual. PRERONA makes all efforts to tender the disabled children useful and self reliant- its motto being "TO MEET THE CHALLENGE OF LIFE" . in brief the aims and  objectives are -

We started as a center for special education, but slowly we moved to different projects according to our need. As some parents can't come everyday due to social constraints. So, we initiated the community base rehabilitation program and our field work is to visit their home weekly or twice a week to provide service to children with disability, 

Principal of Prerona, Sayera Rahman said that when she was in Calcutta, she saw the activities at the India Institute of Cerebral Palsy and she got her inspiration from there. There is a management committee to run the affairs of Prerona, which extend to a gamut of diverse areas. We admit students with various disorders like autism, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, mental retardation and visual impairment. At present there are 77 disabled children who attend the school at Prerona. The institution looks after children from all age groups from one-month-old babies to youngsters past their teens.

Till date more than 200 children have benefited directly and over 5000 indirectly through various awareness programmes like seminars and workshops.

Presently, there are 80 students enrolled for the current academic year, who also have hostel facilities available for them.

The institution also offers non-formal training to parents and social workers to enable them to identify such children and help enroll them in the institution

PRERONA are being provided training and other support under the project to initiate service facilities for rehabilitation of persons with mental illness under the project ‘Development of Community Resources for promoting Mental Health Care in the North Eastern Region’ supported by North East Network, Guwahati was carried out  during the period December’2006 to November’2007.
